Re: Philco 42-345 & 48-482 - pre & post WWII table models

Philco did not use octal tubes so they wouldn't have to pay RCA for the patent rights.

The FM1000 tube and it circuit was Philco's way of getting around the patent for Armstrong's limiter/discriminator circuit.

Re: H H Scott Carlyle console

It appears that the HH Scott 342 receiver is solid state, and 18 watts per channel.

That's a beautiful console.

Re: Olympic Dual-Stereo Console

I don't remember much about the receiver because I was a kid and unable to overhaul it. I don't even know if it was push-pull or not.
I used the cabinet with an outboard Heathkit amp and was impressed with the speakers and the sound of the cabinet.

Re: Olympic Dual-Stereo Console

I had one of these years ago. It had Jensen "special design" woofers and a well built cabinet. I felt it was a big step above the other Olympic sets I've seen.

Re: Bobby Darin

Bobby Darin was extremely talented. He started out doing rock & Roll, then moved to standards, country, and folk. The guy could sing anything.

His singles chart is very diverse:

For those interested in the Benny Goodman Trio and Quartet recordings from the late 1930s, I highly recommend the 3 CD set "The Complete RCA Victor Small Group Recordings". The transfers are excellent, there is no added reverb, and no phony stereo effect added. https://www.amazon.com/Compl...

Oldsmobile used a flathead V8 in the early 1920s. I believe this car would have a flathead inline six.

Re: Radionic cartridge advantages

The Zenith Radionic Cobra cartridge was great when it came out in the late 1940s. It had good compliance and relatively low record wear. Zenith dropped the cartridge in the mid-1950s and the later ceramic Cobra cartridges have better frequency response for hi-fi. Wurlitzer used the Radionic cartridg...

Re: This has to be a rare bird!

The Zenith "Twin 7" record changer is indeed a rare bird.

Columbia did push seven-inch styrene 33s for a time, but RCA's 45 format was simply better for singles. Better in both sound quality, and durability.

That's the best way, and power tools should be not allowed anywhere near the plug.

Re: The perversity of inanimate objects

Always wipe the plug and pan clean with a rag.
Preferably, always use a new washer.
Always start the plug with your fingers, and do not over tighten it.

I''ve run many cars over 200,000 miles, and have never had a drain plug 'wear out'.

Re: Edison discs

Edison discs are vertical-cut (up and down, not lateral like 78s). The used jeweled styli, not steel needles. Playing them on a 78 player will do damage. You can only play them on an Edison player, with a lead screw to move the arm along and a reproducer that responds to vertical modulation. Chris ...

Edison Diamond Discs have a much more natural sound than acoustically recorded Victor / Columbia / Brunswick records. You can especially notice the difference on the sound of the piano.

Re: 1961 Chevrolet! The new look of distinction.....

My grandfather had a 1961 Bel Air 4-door sedan, 6 cylinder / Powerglide. It was very trouble free and stayed in the family into the late 1970s.

I remember how wide and spacious the floors were. Now I understand that is because of the notorious X-frame design.
