That's why I wanted to thank everybody. I want to be welcome again.

Re: Brakes!!!
Got the truck back from the dealership today. They were so proud that they had "kept it under $600." I has asked to meet the guy who worked on it so I could say thank you. Turns out that he approached it analytically instead of by replacing parts until it worked. First he drove it and foun...

Re: FS-Magnavox Concert Grand model 300H owner's manual
Reserve it for somebody who has one, but if nobody does, I'd love to see it. Some childhood friends inherited a summer cottage. It had a big wide mono Maggie. I was always pulling things away from the wall so I could look at the innards. I remember that this had a couple big woofers and at at least ...

I wonder why the 12AX7 in that right hand amp is so bright?
Same manufacturer and internal structure? Remember the "If it ain't broke" rule. Stick to things that need fixing and leave the some-day items for some other day.

Re: Heathkit AA-14 troubleshooting
My correspondent/guide in diagnosing this device has finally led me to the issue with my R channel. A 2200 ohm resistor had opened, applying way too much voltage on the driver and output transistors in that channel. Happily, all the rare devices (transistors) seem to be OK. I'll do some reassembly t...

Re: Brakes!!!
Well, I'll know when I get it back, but so far the dealership's attention to the problem seems superior. They did not try to tell me that hot brake drums with no foot on the brake is "normal." Maybe it helped when the brakes gave a big groan when the service writer drove it into the garage...

Re: FS: Magnavox Pianissimo Phono Carts
Yes, interested! I have a ca. 1951 that uses a similar cart. in a Webster-Chicago changer. I will be visiting where the console is located this weekend (if my brakes get fixed) and will check to see which one seems to fit.

Re: Brakes!!!
Got up early this a.m. (my least favorite practice) so I could be at the big dealership when they opened. They called back late in the day to see how much I wanted done. A driver's side axle seal was leaking some, a parking brake lever as hanging up, etc. I said "it's my daily driver, fix it.&q...

Re: Brakes!!!
Brakes still running hot. Yesterday I drove south 25 miles at ca. 60 mph, coasted/downshifted to a stop with very light braking, Temps were over 100 deg. Back home, in traffic with some braking, I measured 209 deg. L, 270 deg. R. Today I drove N 15 mi. at 60 MPH. I coasted to a stop, using brakes on...

Re: General Electric RP-2060A
My Bogen amp is a transformer-powered device and it had the cap to ground. Here's the article:
https://www.justradios.com/safetytips.html
The focus is on the interference-suppression work of these caps. You may have noise coming in on your power lines. It's common now.

Re: General Electric RP-2060A
Also, there's usually a cap to ground from the power line. The current standard is to use "safety caps. Somebody had posted a link to a good article on safety cap use a couple weeks ago. Maybe look in the "getting started" section. I just looked at the copy I printed. It' from the &qu...

it is playing a couple rpm too fast on all speeds ... do I need to shave the idler? I am hesitant to do such a drastic move, Just a quick note on the idler-diameter thing. The diameter of the idler wheel has no effect at all on speed . The diameter of the motor' turret, yes. The diameter of the pla...

No complaints about your new back from this quarter. It was done in aid of function, as I recall: keep critters and people out but let air flow through. And it's on the back, where in normal use nobody can see it. Ventilation is crucial to longevity in tube equipment. The manufacturers didn't worry ...

Re: Brakes!!!
Update. The 2nd shop, the one with 3 recommendations, said they observed no signs of excessive heating but did see the difference between sides. They said they would adjust the cool side so it was doing more work. They took things apart, inspected, and said AOK. I'll drive around a while and see what...

Re: 1948 Olympic 8-925 AM-FM phono console
I decided to just remove the 100pf caps on those plates (one failed anyway) which improved the frequency response above about 6khz and didn't seem to cause any issues (like ringing). Maybe I'll add a cheap little tweeter? Would improve the sound when using the Bluetooth.... I've done that a few tim...

Squeals and motorboating oscillation sound like an electronics component issue, but the fact that it happens sporadically makes me wonder if maybe it's in the protection circuit. Some solid-state devices have turn-on delays to avoid speaker thump. I have a Denon amp in my living room system and peri...

Re: Brakes!!!
I've usually been able to hear axle and wheel bearings when they get bad. In fact, I was looking at it the other way around: will those hot brakes cook my bearing? But it's worth thinking about and looking into. Being far from home is exactly my worry. My travel is often in the night. I lost a serpe...

Re: Careless Love
I noticed a variety of lyrics and a Bessie Smith version when seeking lyrics. But at some point it became a country song and Ray C. picked it up for his two crossover LPs. I've always found it interesting how interrelated blues, R&B, and country performers were. There were those like Bob Wills a...

Mt radio station has a 10 p.m. hour of "new age" music that i cannot tolerate. When it came on, I hustled in and pooped a CD in the tray. It's Sat. night so I went with something in the pop field. There was "Modern Sounds in C&W Music," Ray Charles singing classics. I am old ...
