Re: New project...

Wow, what a triumph! 50 years from now people will be puzzling over what brand it is.... On the finishing front, experiment on your scraps to see how the stain affects the woods. Find out what it actually looks like before committing. Some use a dilute shellac wash to get even stain effects. Chris C...

Re: The days in Arizona are getting cooler......

Thursday morning I had to dig out the bike gloves and the under-helmet liner to keep my poor bald head warm on the ride to work. Friday we got back into the 70s but it's clear--fall is here.

Chris, I think pretty much all-American built cars had floor vents at some point.

Bill
My '38 Buick has a cowl vent, a flap that tilts up to scoop air.

Re: RCA radio model 6-RF-91 broken cabinet repair

Polish the dial pointer, paint the ends red as original. ;) :?: Test it with a magnet--brass, or plated steel? I always get nervous about polishing plated items too vigorously. My Granny always saved radios for me. One was a G-725 from that Z-company you don't like. It's the Z version of you...

Re: Hershey 24

I just put my '61 Chevy into winter storage. The storage guy gave me a few extra weeks this year but he likes to get things in. The Chevy has no cruise control but it has two forms of air conditioning. (1) Put the top down. And (2), open the footwell vents. Until this car was back on the road, I had...

I can't find a schematic for it. Does it have tuned RF amps on AM or FM?

Re: VM 570 turntable issues

I would be inclined to purchase speakers of the correct size and purpose (tweeters are designed to respond to high frequencies, as you know). Don't worry about original-equipment correctness. For most of us, close enough is going to be good enough. Find some that you can afford, including shipping. ...

Re: Stray (?) cat peeing on the screen door

Outdoor cats have shorter lives than indoor cats: predators, cars. And they are persistent in marking their territory, as you have seen. Maybe you could ask around first, to see if you can identify the owners and explain to them what's happening to your door. Ask them to keep the cat in. If you can'...

Re: Tinkering with OTA TV broadcasts

I'd be inclined to try the free DIY version first. And I would probably do it with copper wire.

Re: Tinkering with OTA TV broadcasts

Bill, I'd try building the one shown in the video. Insulate there the conductors cross over. Pay attention to lead dress (try to get the cable at right angles to the plane of the antenna and to direction. I built a Yagi FM antenna after a move, when I could not receive my public radio station reliab...

Re: Tinkering with OTA TV broadcasts

2nd try; my post just disappeared. Some years ago the tenants at the little cottage I used to rent out in the summer asked for a TV to see the news. I bought a small flat screen ("Polaroid" brand!!) and got out an old 3-bow-tie UHF antenna. All OTA transmission is UHF now. I pointed it in ...

You have done the one simple thing that Magnavox usually didn't--you have isolated the speakers from the record changer.

Re: 1965 Astrosonic 50

Thank you for the extended and interesting reply! My brain has never understood solid-state circuits but gradually I learn. Early audio circuits used interstage transformers just to couple and not to invert for P-P. Is that from impedance issues with early triodes? And I have a 1936 Zenith with P-P ...

Re: Help identifying Magnavox console stereo

Yes, that would identify clearly-bad tubes. But usually, the problems in there older devices are not the tubes. They are aged capacitors and resistors.

Re: 1965 Astrosonic 50

Interesting that the output transistors are transformer-coupled to their drivers. My Heathkit AA-22 has the same scheme. What was it about early transistor amplifier design that required interstage transformers?

Back in Lansing I had a coalroom shop space also. In TC, the coalroom is small, with limited headroom and electric supply also. Most projects get directed to the dining room table of the top of the table saw out in the garage shop.
