Re: Motorola SK-14
That's a really nice 2 piece unit, as Dave says those make a lot more sense and better stereo than a 1 piece console. Hard to understand how the outboard speakers on these could go missing.

Re: Pioneer SX-1050
Sounds like well worth the trouble. One of my first SS receivers that replaced an old mono H-K tube unit was a low-ish power Pioneer SX-626 bought from Stereo Discounters in 1972, a big mail-order outfit that sold all over the US but had their warehouse near us in Baltimore. It served well and excel...

My wife says there's a lot of RSV (Respiratory Syncytial virus) going around, it's traditionally been more problem for younger kids but being seen more seriously in adults the last couple of years and can be serious for the elderly. We both had it last Sept. Only way to verify it from a cold is by a...

Re: Quieter than a Rolls-Royce? The 1965 Fords
I liked Menno back in the day, but he was wrong on that one. Menno tended to sometimes depend on memory or anecdotal info, not always on meticulous research. Cahill was a writer-entertainer, and a darn good one, but no historian. He shilled for Chrysler for $ (and Imperials?) in the later '50s. &quo...

Re: Quieter than a Rolls-Royce? The 1965 Fords
Paul Niedermier of Curbside Classics considered the "65 LTD to be th beginning of the Broughamification of full-size American cars, and he makes a very good case. As to Rolls engines, as long time Packard guy (had 3 '55,56s with 352 and 374 engines) for 40 years I've never heard of Rolls using ...

Re: WTB 7189 Tube
Although prices have gone up a lot since the Russkie invasion, those 6P14p-EV are still a relative bargain, I got some used ones quite cheap once, all were sold as pre-tested and they tested very strong for me. They had to rotate them out of military equipment on a fixed-hour basis that was very con...

Very interesting... wish I knew more of the theory behind SS circuit design but it's a bit heavy at my age. This week working on our final tool dispersal from his estate I found a little transistor checker my Uncle may have built from a kit, it has a switch for N-P-N and P-N-P selection, so assume i...

Re: The smallest paycheck
Most societies over the world venerate their elders far more than Americans tend to. We worship youth here often at the cost of not listening to the wisdom of the those more experienced than we are. There is much to be learned from them if we only will pay attention. $130 for an oil change seems a b...
Re: RCA 75X11
Dunno why but I've never cottoned much to the brown plastic/bakelite era of radios, they kind of seem similar to late '40s cars, lackluster in design. I actually like the cheaper made plastic ones from a bit later mainly because of '50s colors and futuristic/flashy design. I bought a brown late '40s...

I saw the documentary Searching for Sugarman, then years later NPR did a 2 hour program on him, he was known as the Latino Dylan. Very pro-common-man songs and lyrics, sort of a modern Woodie Guthrie that way too. II really liked his stuff and bought several of his CD, "Cold Fact" and &quo...

That's a true hybrid: all tube except the amplifier output stage.
Is it possible, or desirable, to replace Ge transistors with Si?
I know naught about SS stuff.

7591 tubes are available new (Russian) or at least they were before this Ukranian mess disrupted things.

Robbie Robertson
So Robbie Robertson passed yesterday, he did a lot of great stuff with The Band, and later, Martin Scorsese. He had a great deal of Native American ancestry, Mohawk and Cayuga (NY) and emphasized that heritage in some of his later work.

The fancier AAA plan is so worth it. We make at least 20 300 mi trips to VT and back every year. Our plan covers a free tow of 200 miles. About 7 yrs ago one tire of a brand new set of Goodyear Kevlar Wranglers on one of our Xterra's decided to blowout a sidewall on a Sunday on the way home about 80...

My commute from the country into Baltimore was 44 mi each way, my wife's 52 miles. Bikes were not an option. An hour+ each way, sometimes much more in traffic. Being retired for sometime I look back and don't know how we did it for so long, it was wearing. But we raised 3 kids and we wanted to raise...

Bit pricey, considering. Never liked Maggie's sliding tops on all years, or the front mounted receivers found on these years. The seller is just S of Sing-Sing, wonder if he recently escaped? lol That place is one forbidding looking institution.

One of them thar Warwicks that Dave has (in Eye-talian Provincial style, not the prettiest) was one that I found on CL being sold ($50?) by a local minister in Bingo. I picked it up and it ended up with Dave. By '65 Fisher cabinets left something to be desired: heavy, lots of particle board, weak le...

Re: Zenith console divorce situation
This was a freebie out of CL's "Free" section, with an ugly cabinet. The owner was moving out of state in 2 days when I got there and said she was about ready to have the trash folks take it away. They'll take anything left at the curb here for free... sofas, mattresses, furniture, a nice ...
